DAY NINE – “Asking What to Ask”

“Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” Matthew 6:8
“So, if God already knows what I need before I ask Him why should I ask Him?”

Because He knows what you need before you ask Him, and you don’t. But you need to know.
When you have an all-knowing perfectly loving Heavenly Father Who knows what you need wouldn’t it make more sense to ask Him what you need rather than trying to tell Him?

If you are going to ask God for something why not ask Him to show you what you really need?
Doesn’t that make sense?

What if Jesus is trying to help you think differently about prayer?
What if prayer is LISTENING for God to reveal what you need rather than telling Him what you THINK you need?
If you ask God for something you don’t really need, and He gives it to you. Does that benefit you?

Remember when Jesus was teaching this to His disciples, He wasn’t just teaching them about prayer He was also changing how they think about God!
If you think about God in a different way you will also pray to Him differently, right?

So, God is your Father.
God knows what you need before you ask Him.
He knows you better than you know yourself.
So, when you pray to ask for what you need ask Him what you need!
Perhaps what you need most is to know God better!

  1. Do I believe God knows what I need better than I do?
  2. If I don’t trust Him to know my needs, do I really know Him?
  3. Do I need to ask God to help me know Him better?

Heavenly Father, thank you for knowing me so well! Thank you for knowing what I need and caring about what I need. Forgive me for telling you what I think I need when I should be listening to you tell me what I need. And as I do help me learn to know you better! Amen.
