“After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’” Acts 13:22
God was ready to anoint a new king over Israel. He sent His prophet Samuel to do the honors. Arriving at the home of Jesse he reviewed Jesse’s sons but to the surprise of both, none of the young men qualified.
So, Samuel asked if there was a son missing and Jesse had to fetch his youngest son, David, from the distant pastures where he was tending sheep. When Samuel met David, he poured the anointing oil on the head of God’s chosen king.
I can’t speak for you, but if I was checking resumes for would be kings and I saw “Shepherd” as the only previous employment experience I would have tossed it in the trash. What would possible qualify a shepherd to become a king? Name at least one thing. I’m waiting.
But God being omniscient, unlike me.
And God being sovereign, unlike me.
And God being God, unlike me. Saw something in David that qualified him to be a king.
God chose David not because of how he shepherded his sheep, which he did very well, by the way! But God chose David for how he shepherded his heart!
Shepherd his heart?
What does that mean?
How does that happen?
The answer to that will be the topic of my next few posts.
But for now, how is your heart?
If God looked at your heart (which He does, by the way) what would you qualify for?
David had a heart after God’s own heart.
Do you?
David had a heart to do everything God asked him to do!
Do you?
