“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4

How did a shepherd boy become a candidate for a King?

That’s an intriguing question isn’t it? I doubt if we would ever elect a shepherd to be President of the United States. But the people weren’t voting God was choosing!

God chose David because he was very good at being a shepherd! He was present and totally attentive to his sheep. He was also alert while watching over, guarding and protecting his sheep. And third, he was ready to do whatever was necessary to care for the sheep.

But more importantly, God chose David because he was very good at shepherding his soul! He knew how to enter God’s presence and experience Him. He knew how to be alert in guarding his thoughts and words. Also, David was ready to obey God and do anything God called him to do.

You can learn much from David about how to shepherd your soul.

Be present in God’s presence.

Be alert to God’s will and the devil’s wiles.

Be ready to move when God says move!

David, when he was the present and alert shepherd was ready for the bear and the lion when they threatened his sheep. Apparently, they weren’t ready for him because he killed them each with his bare hands!

David, when he was a servant to his brothers was ready to face Goliath because Goliath blasphemed his God! He took him down with a sling and a stone!

David, after Samuel anointed him King was ready to wait for God to deal with King Saul refusing to usurp the throne.

And when David’s time came to ascend to the throne, he was ready to lead.

When you think about it, being ready is what faith is made of! Check this out:

“By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith. By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.  By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise.”  Hebrews 11:7-11
Be a shepherd of your soul today! Be present! Be alert! Be ready!
