Prayer & Fasting
Part 6 - Pastor Gerald

21 Days of Fasting and Prayer is not an end in itself. It is simply a way of putting us, God’s people, in touch with the life-changing power of God. If anything changes we must connect with the power of God. And, you don't program the power of God into something, you pray the power of God into it trusting in the accomplishments of the cross..

I have a fear. My fear is that after all of this talk, writing and preaching about fasting and prayer that we somehow become lulled into thinking that we are actually fasting and praying, when we're just skipping a meal, or turning the TV off for an hour, or giving up Facebook for an hour or two weekly and calling that fasting. We have bought in, we believe that Fasting and Prayer is something we are to do as New Testament Christians but we are only doing the outward exercise. We have bought into the concept but we are not plugging into the power source.

Maybe I can illustrate it this way: What if you walked into my house, and you notice that the doors squeak, the paint is peeling, the legs on the chairs are broken, and the linoleum is cracked and broken and the carpet is dirty and molded. Then you walk into my garage and see that is full of state-of-the-art tools all gleaming, fresh out of the Craftsman boxes and there is a brand new vacuum cleaner over in the corner. But you can tell from the state of the house that these wonderful tools have never been used.

Tools are only good if they are put to use. Likewise, as believers we have this incredibly powerful tool called Fasting and Prayer. It is a powerful weapon (for the weapons of our warfare are… mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5), but it will do no good if we know it's there if we just keep it in storage, never pulling it out and applying it to our problems, concerns, relationships, and responsibilities.

Fasting and Prayer is a tool that God has given us to use on all the disrepair in our lives, in our church body, in our communities, in our country.

Andrew Murray wrote, Fasting helps to express, to deepen, to confirm the resolution that we are ready to sacrifice anything…to attain what we seek for the kingdom of God.

[15] Blow the trumpet in Jerusalem! Announce a time of fasting; call the people together for a solemn meeting. [16] Bring everyone-the elders, the children, and even the babies. Call the bridegroom from his quarters and the bride from her private room. [17] The priests, who minister in the Lord's presence, will stand between the people and the altar, weeping. Let them pray, "Spare your people, Lord! They belong to you, so don't let them become an object of mockery. Don't let their name become a proverb of unbelieving foreigners who say, 'Where is the God of Israel? He must be helpless!' " Joel 2:15-17 (NLT)

I urge you to take out this tool from your spiritual toolbox and restore your focus, revive the power of God in your life and feast on God!

The Lord says, "… Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning… Don't tear your clothing in your grief; instead, tear your hearts." Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful… He is filled with kindness and is eager not to punish you…Who knows? Perhaps even yet He will give you a reprieve, sending you a blessing…. Joel 2:12-14 NKJV
